India Suspends Tourism Ties with Turkey and Azerbaijan Over Pro-Pakistan Stance

May 21, 2025 | New Delhi — In a bold move with wide-reaching implications for international tourism, the Indian government has initiated a diplomatic and tourism boycott of Turkey and Azerbaijan, citing their recent pro-Pakistan rhetoric on Kashmir and other geopolitical issues. The action, which includes official advisories, curtailed cultural exchanges, and reduced airline cooperation, is expected to impact thousands of Indian travelers and reshape outbound travel patterns in the coming months.

India Responds to Diplomatic Provocations

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a formal travel advisory on May 20, urging Indian citizens to defer non-essential travel to Turkey and Azerbaijan, citing the two nations’ continued political support for Pakistan in international forums, especially regarding India’s internal affairs.

“The recent statements by Turkey and Azerbaijan demonstrate a clear alignment with Pakistan’s narrative on Kashmir, which is unacceptable to the Indian government and people,” the MEA said in a statement. “As a result, cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges will be reviewed, and a hold is being placed on new travel-related collaborations.”

This decision follows last week’s Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit, where Turkish and Azerbaijani representatives reportedly echoed Islamabad’s views on Kashmir and called for international “intervention” in the region — remarks that sparked sharp criticism in New Delhi.
