Himachal’s Border Tourism Boost: Kinnaur & Lahaul-Spiti Open New Travel Frontiers

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – June 9, 2025 – In a landmark decision set to transform the tourism landscape of Himachal Pradesh, the state government has officially launched a pioneering ‘Border Tourism’ initiative. This groundbreaking move opens up previously restricted, strategically significant yet culturally rich areas in the districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, inviting domestic tourists to explore the majestic beauty along the India-China border.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is slated to inaugurate this initiative during his upcoming two-day visit to Kinnaur, commencing at the historic frontier village of Shipki-La. The program, developed in close coordination with the Union Government, aims to not only boost the local economy and create livelihood opportunities but also to foster a deeper sense of national integration among communities residing in these remote tribal belts.

Unlocking Hidden Gems for Travelers

Under the new initiative, regulated tourist access will be granted to several breathtaking and culturally significant locations that previously required special permissions from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army due to their strategic importance. These newly accessible areas include:

  • In Kinnaur District: Lepcha-La, Shipki-La, Gue Monastery (famous for its mummified monk), Khana, Dumti, the Rani area of Sangla, and Chitkul (often referred to as the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border).
  • In Lahaul-Spiti District: Selected designated areas that offer stark, majestic Himalayan landscapes and unique tribal cultures.

The revised protocols now allow local residents and bona-fide tourists to visit these sites by simply presenting valid identity documents. While access is eased, the ITBP and Army will continue to facilitate smooth and secure movement, ensuring national security remains paramount.

Boosting Local Economies and Preserving Heritage

This transformative step is poised to inject significant life into the local economies of these remote regions. By encouraging responsible tourism, the initiative seeks to strengthen local infrastructure and create new avenues for income generation through homestays, local guiding, and cultural experiences. The emphasis remains on sustainable tourism, ensuring that the development does not compromise the fragile ecology or the unique tribal heritage that defines Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.

A government spokesperson highlighted that this initiative marks a significant achievement for the state, blending security, sustainability, and socio-economic inclusion. It reflects a long-standing effort by the state government to integrate India’s remotest villages into the mainstream without diluting their distinct cultural identities.

A New Chapter for Himachal Tourism

The opening of these border areas adds a new dimension to Himachal Pradesh’s already diverse tourism offerings. It appeals to adventure enthusiasts, cultural explorers, and those seeking unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences. This strategic move, coupled with the recent launch of the Eco-Tourism Policy 2024 aimed at developing 77 new eco-tourism sites, signifies Himachal Pradesh’s aggressive push towards becoming a premier, sustainable tourist destination.

The ‘Border Tourism’ initiative in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti represents a bold and visionary step, promising not just unforgettable journeys for travelers but also a brighter, more integrated future for the vibrant communities dwelling in the high Himalayas.
