Tragic Air India Flight 171 Crash in Ahmedabad

The tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 on June 12, 2025, has profoundly impacted the airline’s aspirations to become a world-class carrier. 🛫 Air India’s Ambitions and Setbacks

On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The flight, en route to London Gatwick, was carrying 242 individuals—230 passengers and 12 crew members. Only one passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national seated in seat 11A, survived the crash. He sustained multiple injuries and is currently hospitalized in stable condition.

The aircraft crashed into a hostel block of B. J. Medical College in the Meghaninagar area, resulting in a massive fireball and extensive damage. At least 28 people on the ground were killed, bringing the total fatalities to 269. The crash is the deadliest aviation disaster involving a sole survivor and the first fatal crash involving the Boeing 787 model

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and confirmed that the victims included Indian, British, and Canadian nationals. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with support from Boeing and international agencies.

This incident has raised serious concerns about aviation safety standards and has significantly impacted Air India’s aspirations to become a world-class airline under Tata Group’s ownership.
