Reports indicate that the current Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, addressed the question of Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

While acknowledging that the issue was discussed, Carney stated that he needed to be “careful about further commentary” due to an ongoing judicial process. He emphasized the importance of “law enforcement dialogue” and “cooperation directly,” as well as “addressing transnational repression.”

This meeting marked a significant step towards a potential “reset” in India-Canada diplomatic ties, which had been strained since former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s killing in June 2023. India has consistently denied these allegations.

A key outcome of the Modi-Carney meeting was the agreement between India and Canada to reinstate high commissioners in each other’s capitals, signaling an effort to normalize diplomatic relations.
